Different views of history
Once upon a time in
banana land, there was a good monkey king. He was not good because he built
mills, bridges and houses for the poor but because he was wise enough to know
that he himself committed many mistakes. For example, he had a high tower
built for the people to look around in the realm. At the beginning, many
inhabitants went up the tower for curiosity but soon the building remained
deserted.
At least he was not as
bad as other kings were. However, as he was the strongest, nobody dared to
contradict him, not even his advisors. Therefore, he established a monkeys’
assembly.
At the first session of
the gathering everybody, males, females and children were present. But then,
at the second, third and other assembly meetings less and less members of the
monkey people showed up.
The monkey king thought
that they maybe needed a bit of education, so he established schools for
everybody to learn about history, literature and rhetoric.
After some time, the
system seemed to work and the king decided to leave his realm to visit his
counterpart in the neighbouring empire. They had been friends for a long time
and now, our monkey king wanted to convince him to try the same reforms.
“Sooner or later, the people will govern themselves! There is no king nor
god, who is able to oversee everything,” he told his friend. The other king
frowned, “did you observe the monkeys at the marketplace? They are like
children, not interested in anything and just fooling around.” “You have to
teach them! Remember! You got an education as well, otherwise you would be
just the same as them,” our king replied, “come with me and see the results
of my experiment!”
So, both travelled
incognito to our king’s realm to have a look. When they arrived and went
across the marketplace, they saw big paintings of a monkey. Our king asked
one of the tradesmen there, “what is this?” “He is our new leader and calls
himself dictator. When our king disappeared, he took power.” Astonished, our
king looked at his peer from the other empire, who was grinning sarcastically,
then turned to the tradesman again revealing who he really was, “and do you
like it?” The tradesman fell to his knees, “my king!” he mumbled, "why
are you blaming us? God's job is to create the world. The king has the task
of governing the world. The father rules the family and the children obey the
father. That's the order of the world."
Furious, the king went to
the palace, pushed the guards aside and rushed into the great hall where the
dictator had occupied his throne. When this monkey saw his former king coming,
he jumped out of one of the lower windows and escaped. The king was very sad
and called his former advisors to be informed what had happened during his
absence.
Then, he invited some of
the most capable monkeys and formed a kind of advisory council. Their task
was it to teach the monkeys and to control the affairs of the state. When he
saw that the system worked well, he called in an assembly for all the monkey
citizens again.
There was much trouble
for many years, but in the end, everybody in the community assumed
responsibility and the king resign from office to enjoy his quiet retirement.
This was the tale of the
king in the history books. Now, read the tale told by the monkey people!
Once upon a time in
banana land, there was a monkey king. All readers remember the vast number of
tales about good kings but everybody knows that those so-called good kings had
all just lived on the back of their people. Actually, this king as well was
not especially good or bad. Sometimes he got mills, bridges and houses for
the poor built. Nevertheless, many of his buildings were for his own fun, for
example, a high tower to look around in his realm.
At least, he was not as
bad as other kings could be. However, as he was the strongest, nobody dared
to contradict him, not even his advisors.
One day, some younger
monkeys had grown up and demanded the right to decide about their own lives
and the realm. The king was forced to establish a monkeys’ assembly.
At the first session of
the gathering, everybody, males, females and children were present. But then,
at the second, third and other assembly meetings less and less members of the
monkey people showed up because they saw that nothing really changed.
Therefore, they
established schools for everybody to learn about history, literature and
rhetoric because they thought that the monkeys needed a bit of education.
The king, of course,
wanted to keep his power and tried to hinder development. So, after a time,
the king was chased away. He found refuge in the neighbouring empire, he had
been friends with the king there for a long time and now, wanted to ask for
help to regain power. They came with a bigger group of guards and when they
crossed the marketplace, the king turned to a tradesman revealing who he
really was. The tradesman frightened fell to his knees, “my king!”
Furious, the king went to
the palace, pushed the guards at the entry aside, rushed into the great hall
and occupied his throne again. Then, he called his former advisors to be
informed what had happened during his absence.
After some time, the
monkeys succeeded to chase away the king again and formed a guard regiment to
defend their freedom and a kind of advisory council. The task of this plenum
was to teach the monkeys and to control the affairs of the state. When they
saw that the system worked, they called in an assembly of all the monkey
citizens.
There was much trouble
for many years, but in the end, everybody in the community assumed
responsibility.

Just a mirror
In a glacier, there was a
cave, inside, a rock wall polished by the ice and on it a layer of clear,
frozen water, a mirror of best quality. When the first monkeys discovered
their portrait in the ice, they didn’t recognize themselves and thought that
this had to be a kind of god.
But not everybody amongst
the monkeys was superstitious, there was an inquisitive one who examined the
phenomena a bit closer and found out that the background in the ice resembled
to the other side of the cave. Then, he moved his hands, looked at them in
the ice and discovered that they were just the same. He went to the other
side of the cave and came closer again. Now, he was sure, it was him there in
the ice.
Knowledge is power and he
was ambitious enough to use his advantage.
Another monkey came into
the cave and the clever one hid in a corner and began to talk in an altered
voice. The other monkey thought that a god was before him and talking to him.
When the clever monkey
spoke to the other monkeys in the cave pretending to be the voice of god, he
ordered them to always come in one by one in order to prevent them
recognizing each other in the mirror and nobody ever discovered that the
godly voice was his. This went on for a long time and sometimes he used his
power for the good of his people but on other occasions, he used it for his
own aims.
There was a young and
beautiful female, who was in love with another young male. The monkey
pretending to be the voice of god as well wanted to marry her, so he told the
couple that they couldn’t get married and that the female had to get married
to another male. Of course, the couple was shocked. But what could they do?
The female monkey was
suspicious when she heard the name of the male monkey she had to marry. She
observed that this monkey was never present when the crowed waited in front
of the cave to hear the word of god. Therefore, she began to follow the
monkey and finally discovered his secret.
Some days before her
wedding, when she was in the cave to hear the word of god, she went to the
corner where the monkey was hiding. First, he was shocked, so she told him
she would tell everybody about his secret if he forced her to marry him. The
monkey had to give in and from then on, his rulings got normal again.
The female monkey finally
could marry her lover. Actually, she should have been happy about it but doubts
worried her whether the male monkey she had married was really the right male
for her. First, he was not less superstitious than the others, second, he
would have left her for the simple command of a mirror god.

¡Tenemos nuestra cabeza para
pensar!
ancianos no estaban allí.
Debemos
preservar y defender nuestra cultura, nuestra gente.”
"¿No recuerdas quién te dio a luz,
quién te alimentó y te vistió? ¿No respetas la tradición de tus antepasados? ¿Para
nuestra cultura? ¿Por nuestros valores? ¿Para nosotros, la generación mayor?”
El anciano parecía exhausto. No había contado con nada de eso. “¿Cómo te
atreves a contradecirnos?” jadeó. “Te comes nuestras bananas y cocos. ¿No te
sientes avergonzado?
opinión, “¿a dónde quieres ir? ¿Qué quieres hacer?" "Si mi tribu me
Entonces, llegó el gran día;

Think before acting!
Once upon a time, there
was a big valley with two empires and a large river in the middle served as
border for them. On one side of the water, there were the monkeys believing
in the banana god and on the other side the believers of the coconut god. For
a long time, they had been in war with each other, then both exhausted, war
activity ended. The ancestors in both camps still remembered the fighting and
told their progenies frightening stories about their former enemies. Therefore,
when they saw the other on the opposite shore, they screamed and shouted at them
and swore revenge for alleged grievances. Some even threw stones, spears or
fired their arrows, but the river was just too large so that the projectiles
always landed somewhere in the middle of the river without causing any harm.
In these cases, those on the other side used to laugh loudly, “you could
never kill me. Come over and you will get what you deserve!”
The monkey is an
inquisitive being and after many generations, there were some young monkeys,
who built small boats and paddled over to the other side. Of course, they
didn’t tell their elders about it because they knew that elders hadn’t
forgotten the very old feud.
Nevertheless, after a
certain time, the elders discovered that their grandsons and granddaughters
wore new clothes and jewellery that had not been known before. First, the
elders forbade their youngsters to wear them, but without much success. Then,
they created laws against it so that the youngsters only wore the new fashion
when the elders were not there.
Of course, the elders
felt that their influence on their grandchildren weakened but they thought it
was undermined by the enemy from the other side of the river. Wilder and
wilder, the elders called for revenge of the old and new alleged grievances
and at the end for war.
Many of the young monkeys
on both sides of the river knew that all this propaganda against the people
of the other side were just pure nonsense but they didn’t dare to contradict
their elders.
A general assembly of all
the people was convened to announce the decision of the Council of Elders.
“We have considered all possibilities and we, the elders, came to the
conclusion that there is no other way than war against our ancient enemy, the
people of the empire on the other side of the water. We must preserve and
defend our culture, our people.” Many of the young monkeys were very sad and
hung their heads because they knew that on the other side of the river, the
young monkeys there were as sad as they were. “Tomorrow, we will manufacture
weapons and boats in order to begin the war within ten days.”
Everybody in the assembly
was very silent.
Suddenly, a young female
monkey stood up, “I don’t want that war. The monkeys on the other side of the
river are my friends.”
Everybody looked at the
female monkey, the youngers watched her with admiration and fear for her, the
elders observed her with suspicion and hate.
“Are you a spy?” asked
the speaker of the elders. “Do you call those dogs on the other side of the
river your friends?” “Yes, the monkeys on the other side of the river are my
friends,” replied the female monkey emphatically. “Don’t you remember who
gave you birth who nourished and clothed you? Don’t you have any respect for
the tradition of your ancestor? For our culture? For our values? For us, the
older generation?” the elder seemed exhausted. He had not expected anything
like that. “How dare you to contradict us?” he gasped, “you eat our bananas
and coconuts. Don’t you feel ashamed? If you don’t change your mind you can’t
be member of our tribe anymore.”
Quietly but audible for
everybody in the assembly, she said, “I love my parents and my ancestors. I
have friends amongst this tribe and amongst the other tribe. I don’t want my
friends to fight against each other in a senseless war.”
The elder nearly fell of
the pulpit, “you are not our child anymore. Go! Leave our assembly! You have
two hours to leave our lands. Maybe, you will find refuge in the camp of our
enemies.”
The young female monkey
had tears in her eyes but slowly she turned and slowly went away. Shortly
after that, the assembly was dissolved.
The female went to her
house to get her few possessions in order to leave her homeland.
Her parents, brothers and
sisters were very sad and tried to convince her to change her mind, “where do
you want to go? What do you want to do?” “If my tribe forces me to choose
between them and my friends, they can’t be a good tribe,” she replied.
At the end of the
settlement, there were members of the war party spitting at her and calling
her traitor.
She went up into the
mountains and found a large cave where she settled down. At night, she lit a
fire and watched the stars. First, she felt very lonely but then, she
observed a fire somewhere on the opposite side of the valley on the other
side of the river. She knew that somebody from the other tribe had made the
same decision as her.
During the day, she could
see her tribe building a big ship in order to ferry across the river but the
construction went very slowly as shipbuilding had not been exercised for a
long time.
She had been in the
mountains for two nights, when she heard some rustle in between the trees. She
listened carefully and suddenly the saw one of her girlfriends coming out of
the forest.
This female informed her
about everything what was happening in the settlement, that the ship was not
really ready for shipping, that the warriors would probably drown in the
river and that most of the young monkeys in the tribe had the same opinion as
her. “We must contact our friends at the other side of the river and inform
them about what’s happening here.”
So, they went down to the
river a bit away from the settlement, took out their small boats hidden in
the reeds and paddled over to the other side. In the middle of the water,
they suddenly saw another boat coming towards them. First, they thought that
those were warriors from the other tribe, but then, they recognized their
friends. They all were happy to meet.
They agreed that the
elders of both sides were a bit crazy, that they wanted to make war across
the water but were not even able to build a normal ship to cross the river.
Furthermore, they consented that something had to be done to save the elders
and their warriors from drowning.
For the next days, while
the elders and warriors were working on their useless ship on both sides of
the river, the young rebels pulled a liana with many tree trunks hanging on
it across the water.
Then, the big day
arrived; Elders and warriors on both sides of the river got on their ships to
ferry across the water. Drums were beaten, horns were blown and shouts of war
could be heard.
If it hadn’t been so sad,
one would have laughed. The ships had not even reached the middle of the
river when both vehicles capsized and the elders and their warriors were in
danger of drowning. The fast-flowing water carried them to the liana with
tree trunks.
Quickly, the young rebels
of both sides came with their small boats and rescued the wet monkeys one by
one to the secure shore.
There, female monkeys lit
fires to prepare banana soup and coconut tea to warm the sodden heroes of the
failed war.
Still for many
generations to come, the young rebels could not convince the elders to live
in peace with the other tribe on the other side of the river.
But one day, the young monkeys built a bridge ……….

mich einen Lebenslauf schreiben will.
„Was für falsche

a választásokat. A másik
Később a vízben, a két
hangsúlyozza a másik. „Haha!
Vége a cigi
