The son of the sun
In the middle of the
rainforest, there was a big rock. It was higher than the highest trees and
from it, one could see far over the green lawn of trees.
One day in the morning, a
monkey climbed up the rock in order to warm his back in the sunrays. At the
top, he sat down, closed his eyes and began to have a nap.
Some animals came by at
the foot of the rock and as they could only see the contours of the monkey
surrounded by the sunrays, they thought that the son of the sun had come down
to them. They collected some fruit, put them down at the foot of the rock,
prayed to the contours of the monkey and then left the place.
When the monkey opened
his eyes again and looked down, he saw the fruit. First, he was surprised but
as he was hungry, he went down and ate them.
The next morning, the
monkey climbed up the rock again, sat down, closed his eyes and even began to
pray to the sun because he hoped that he would get some fruit again. As he
opened his eyes, he saw some fruit again and was happy.
This went on for some
time until a small mouse happened to pass by the foot of the rock and saw the
monkey eating the fruit. The mouse told the other animals, and the next
morning, the animals decided to lay the monkey a trap.
When they saw the monkey
climbing up the rock, they put some fruits at the foot of the rock, around
the fruits a liana and then hid behind some bushes. After some time the
monkey came down the rock and began to eat the fruits. Suddenly the other
animals pulled the liana and the monkey was hung up on a tree by one of his
feet.
The animals were very
angry, threw fruits at him as he was hanging there and the monkey was very
afraid and screamed.
The bear was not far away
when he heard the tumult and came by. When he arrived, he told the animals to
let the poor monkey down and then asked what had happened. Of course,
everybody wanted to talk at the same time. The bear gave a big roar and there
was silence. Then he asked the oldest animal to tell him the story.
"He made us believe
that he was the son of the sun sitting up there on the rock surrounded by sun
rays. We brought him fruit and he ate them."
Then the bear asked the
monkey.
"Every morning, I
went up the rock to warm my back and each time, when I came down, I saw some
fruit collected here, so I ate them. After a time, I thought that the sun had
given me the fruit, so I even prayed for the fruit."
Then, everybody was
silent waiting for the bear's reaction.
The bear was not a bad
animal, but he was hungry and when he saw the fruit, he gave a big roar and
all the other animals disappeared in the forest. Then he laughed loudly about
the stupidity of the animals and humans and began to eat the fruit.
